Aiding mental health for teens with cystic fibrosis

Paddle On is a mobile app developed for the Champions Action Network which serves as a mental health services companion for teens and young adults suffering from cystic fibrosis.

Young adults living with cystic fibrosis often develop mental health issues associated with the disease. Anxiety and depression occurrence rates in CF patients are 2-3 times that of the general population. Working for the clinical psychologist who developed the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with CF intervention, I designed a mobile app that supplemented the outpatient experience. The app featured in-session programs, thought journaling for on-going acceptance work, binaural recordings for meditation, and audio journaling for defusions.

1. Users built upon in-session work by capturing personal sentiments like their Values
2. Users could select and sort Values that aligned with areas of life they wanted to work on by journaling
3. Values became the pillars of their ongoing journaling exercise
4. Patients could set the Barriers that CF presents to fully living their Values
5. Once Values were established, troubling thoughts could be captured as Quick Notes from the Home Screen
6. Quick Notes encouraged patients to capture the troubling thought and assign it to a Value afterward
